Insurance; colourful protection.
co-written with Kayla Boys
When we think of insurance, we often think of filling in a questionnaire online, getting multiple quotes and ensuring that it lines up with what we can afford before giving over our payment details. Problem is, that online form you filled out, actually doesn’t care about your story or motivations for insurance.
What if we changed how we get insured?
What if we made it fun? Engaging? Personable.
Introducing, one of our first clients, Kayla Boys. Kayla is the owner of Kayla Boys Insurance Agency, a Farmers Insurance affiliate, in Ballard. Kayla’s motivation for selling insurance is driven from her love of working within her community in Ballard, while listening to her neighbours about their insurance needs and how their own personable story can write their policy.
We recently interviewed Kayla, which you can view on our IGTV stories @thesmallbproject
Kayla’s unique selling point is not that she and her colleague Andrew are very knowledgeable, fun and kind. It’s that they have one on one conversations with their customers to ensure that they have a full understanding of what their customer needs to get the right policy, and cost for them.
Kayla’s advice for small businesses is to ask yourselves; “what could go wrong?”
Does your insurance cover just liability or business insurance AND liability? Because it’s not only what your landlord requires you to have, but also what you need to make sure your business stays open should there be an incident.
Your insurance should come top of mind when forming your business and business budgets.
However; Kayla mentioned in our IGTV interview recently, that there are different levels of options for small businesses owners to explore for now, and in the future.
A key differentiator for Kayla, is again the importance she places on getting to know her customers through a thorough conversation and active relationship. What you need now may not be what you need as you scale and grow - same with protecting yourself with the right insurance.
“Nobody knows your business like you do” said Kayla in our interview. So if you don’t connect with your insurance representative, trust your gut and your investment and seek a better relationship protecting your needs.
Our conversation wasn’t just on small businesses either - we focused on our younger community members looking for insurance outside of their parent’s policy. Kayla’s advice for young people seeking their first insurance policies is:
Ask if your rate is going to change?
How long is the policy period?
Are there any discounts? Ie; for students with a certain gpa.
If I have a claim or need help, who can I call?
Again, insurance is a lifelong investment - having a one on one phone conversation or text conversation can protect you for every moment ahead.
Kayla’s colleague, Andrew says “You’re never too young to start a conversation about life insurance and to learn the value it can bring into your life.”
It’s Kayla’s personable connection with her customers, community and charity of choice that makes her so unique and successful. She even said to remind businesses with vacant blocks right now to ensure your policy covers you and your property - ask your representative, or give Kayla a call.
Kayla came to the small b project looking for foundational marketing advice and then campaign management - what we found in the first few conversations is that this is no normal insurance agency. Kayla is shaking up the insurance narrative and we are here for it!
It’s been a pleasure working with and supporting Kayla launching in Ballard.
A huge thanks to our small b volunteers for their cheerleading and expertise - we couldn’t have done it without you.
Kayla - keep thriving the way you intended - we need more color + protection!
